Collaborating with Medical Affairs to Identify Development Needs

I work closely with Medical Affairs leaders to identify and articulate significant capability gaps, including those that will define future excellence.

  • Embedded in strategic planning

Capability needs are often identified during core Medical Affairs activities, such as the medical planning process, cross-functional collaboration reviews, or communication alignment with internal and external stakeholders. These moments provide a natural lens through which capability requirements emerge.

  • Framework-driven future readiness

Future-proofing parts of, or an entire organisation, involves developing tailored capability frameworks that establish a clear view of the necessary capabilities and proficiency levels for various roles and experience levels. Ideally, such a capability framework should encompass skills for both external and internal environments.

  • Structured assessment

Depending on context and maturity, I support capability evaluation using interviews, existing tools, or self-assessments. I have assisted clients in enhancing or implementing capability tools that enable personalised development plans and the prioritisation of initiatives.

Anticipated outcome
A shared and aligned understanding of existing gaps and future capability requirements that enables focused development planning, prioritisation, and resource allocation.

Delivering Scientific, Strategic, and Actionable Learning Experiences

I design and deliver customised training that equips Medical Affairs teams with the skills to lead effectively — scientifically, strategically, and cross-functionally.

  • Spanning a broad capability spectrum

Programmes cover areas such as scientific engagement, external communication, insight generation, omnichannel execution, storytelling, and business acumen. Each topic is tailored to reflect the client’s product lifecycle stage, disease area, and strategic priorities.

  • Interactive and reflective formats

Training is structured to engage Medical Affairs professionals through facilitated discussions, real-world scenarios, role-based exercises, and coaching-style reflection. The aim is not just knowledge, but capability that can be applied immediately and with confidence.

  • Example

One such engagement involved the development of a bespoke Insight Capability Framework, which included a comprehensive learning journey and team training. This programme helped align expectations and elevate the strategic value of field insights across Medical Affairs. (See further details in the Insight Programme overview.)

Anticipated Outcome
Medical Affairs professionals will demonstrate greater confidence, consistency, and clarity, leading to, e.g. more strategic engagement, improved cross-functional collaboration, and strengthened scientific leadership.

Advising on External Learning Solutions and Supporting Implementation

If a capability gap is identified that cannot be addressed through training delivered by Humvia, I will advise on the most suitable external learning solution. This recommendation is based on a strategic alignment with the capability need. It is provided through a network of trusted collaborators, including trainers and facilitators with extensive expertise in leadership, communication, coaching, and other areas pertinent to Medical Affairs. (See further: current collaboration partners.)

I can either signpost and hand over or remain involved as the project lead to ensure alignment with internal objectives, continuity of delivery, and that the solution is customised to meet the expectations and context of Medical Affairs teams.

Anticipated Outcome
Learning is strategically aligned, of high quality, and seamlessly integrated, ensuring that Medical Affairs teams undergo development that is credible, relevant, and directly applicable to their role.
